Hello, and welcome to the Karoo 2 Cape MTB Tour.
Our goal is simple: Gather a few friends, clear the diary and find some of the most spectacular MTB trails to ride. We may be biased, but we think that some of the best riding in South Africa exists between the Klein Karoo and the Cape Winelands.
Born out of frustration, the inaugural 2021 Karoo to Cape MTB tour will kick off in May 2021. The idea around this first tour will be to test the format, test the accommodation and test the route. If we like what we see, we will probably turn it into an annual event...and who knows, it may grow into something bigger one day!
Riders will drive to "basecamps", and do 2 out-loop's in each location before driving to the next camp. 8 Days of Riding, 4 Basecamps.
Accommodation will be scenic, comfortable and as close to the riding trails as possible.
Route's will vary in distance between 50-80km's per day, with most days achieving around 1000 meter's of vertical ascent.
Riders will kick off in the tour by driving to BaseCamp 1 - situated south of the Swartberg Mountains near Outshoorn.
After 2 magical days of riding, riders will head West towards Swellendam and setup base in the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy.
Still heading West, we will meander our way through the Riviersonderend region until we get to Greyton, nestled in the foothills of the Overberg, which will be our home for a further 2 days and nights.
Our final basecamp is located in the Elgin Valley - home of the Oak Valley and Paul Cluver trail network. We'll spend 3 nights here, before making our way back to George.
Located in Matjiesrivier, this venue will host our riders for the first two nights of the tour. Riders can expect comfortable rooms in a magnificent setting, an organised braai on the first night, and hearty breakfasts each morning. We will have the option of eating at the restaurant on the second evening, or exploring something close by in the area.
Located in the Heidelberg district, this farm is one of South Africa's historic treasures. Built in 1735, riders will be hosted on the farm by the Moodie family, who have managed this farm for 6 generations, and treated to comfortable rooms, dinner and breakfast on site.
Set in the quaint town of Greyton, the Post House will accommodate our riders in Deluxe rooms, provide bike cleaning and laundry services if required, and ensure our riders are treated to a full breakfast each morning. Riders will have the option of eating at the Post House or exploring some of the local restaurants that this little town has to offer.
The Oak Lane self-catering cottages are set on a working farm in the Elgin valley and will host our riders for the final three nights of the Tour. Riders can expect an organised braai on arrival night, and healthy breakfasts each morning. We will explore some of the local restaurants and markets on our other evenings.
Day 1: We conquer the mighty Swartberg Pass. Over to Prince Albert, coffee stop, and then back to our Basecamp.
Day 2: Depending on how riders feel, we will either ride out on the Oudemuragie road to the Olive Farm, or head towards Calitzdorp on a gravel grinder section that is lined with stunning scenery.
Day 3: We're in the heart of the Grootvadersbosch conservancy with a number of trail options to choose from. Today, we'll tackle the Black route.
Day 4: We're working on a custom route through the conservancy and farms in the area. Watch this space.
Day 5: Greyton is home to a fantastic trail network. On day 5, we will look to get into the mountains and do some climbing, before making our way back home for lunch.
Day 6: We will do some exploring around the Greyton regions and through the farms in the area - all nestled at the foothills of the Riviersonderend range.
Day 7: We're in the heart of the Elgin valley, and the trail options are plentiful. Day 7 will see our group tackle the Lebanon trail network.
Day 8: We'll spend a great deal of Day 8 in the Oak Valley and Paul Cluver trail network. Life does not get better than this day.
Excellent! This year's tour is limited to a small group of friends, and we're now fully booked up. We promise to test the format, refine and improve where we can, and then turn this into something a little more permanent going forward.
Until then, please connect with us on the links below and we'll keep you posted.
